RULES OF THE GAME

REGULATION TIME: The game is divided into two 10-minutehalves.  A half could consist of several or just one continuous round. There is no limit to the number or duration of these rounds.  There is a two-minutetime out between rounds and a 30-minute half-time intermission between halves.  At the end of each half, teams switch sides.(NOTE: As stated above, in regulation play a half is 10 minutes long, however, if a player were to grab the cone just before the clock was about to run out and the half was about to end, the time on the clock would be extended indefinitely, provided said player was actively and aggressively advancing the cone. If the player with the cone halts or delays his advance, the half will end right then and there. Penalties and paint checks occurring during this point in the match will be handled in the usual way.)

SCORING: In this game, a team attempts to score as many points as it can during each half by advancing an orange cone, located at midfield, over the opposing team's goal line.  Each time a team scores, the clock is stopped, the judge inspects the carrier and the cone for paint splats, the cone is returned to center field, and the players prepare for the next round.  After a brief time out, players hurry to their starting positions, the game master blows the starting whistle, the clock is restarted, and play is resumed.  The team that scores the most points at the end of regulation time wins the game.  If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, the team with the fewest penalties wins.

BONUS POINTS: One bonus point will be awarded any time a team scores in the first five minutes of a half or any time, excluding overtime, a team scores when there are still active players from the opposing team on the field.  See examples below:

EXAMPLE #1: Three minutes after the first half begins, a team advances the cone across an opposing team's goal line.  At the time they crossed, the other team still had two players in the game.  In addition to the one point they would normally receive for crossing the goal line, the scoring team would also receive two bonus points.  The first bonus point is for scoring within the first five minutes of the half and the second bonus point is for scoring while there were still opposing players in the game.  Ultimately, the scoring team would be awarded a total of three points.

EXAMPLE #2: Four minutes after the second half begins, a team eliminates all of their opponents and crosses the opposing team's goal line.  In addition to the one point they would normally receive for crossing the goal line, the scoring team would also receive one bonus point for scoring within the first five minutes of the half.  Ultimately, the scoring team would be awarded a total of two points.

EXAMPLE #3: Nine minutes from the time the second half began, a team advances the cone across their opponent's goal line.  At the time they crossed, the other team still had three players in the game.  In addition to the one point they would normally receive for crossing the goal line, the scoring team would also receive one bonus point for scoring while there were still opposing players in the game.  Ultimately, the scoring team would be awarded a total of two points.

EXAMPLE #4: Fourteen minutes from the time the second half began, one team completely wipes out the other and advances the cone across the goal line.  In this case, the scoring team would be awarded one point only.

OVERTIME: If the teams are tied both in points and in penalties, a sudden-death overtime will be played to break the tie and determine a winner.  The first team to score in overtime wins and the game is ended at that point.  If, after five minutes, both teams failed to score and the game is still tied, then the team that advanced the cone nearest to the opposing team's goal line wins.  If neither team succeeded in advancing the cone, then the team that received the fewest number of penalties in overtime wins.  If this does not apply, then the team with the least number of eliminated players wins.

THE TEAMS: Teams will consist of three principal and two or more reserve players; however, the combined total of principal and reserve players must not exceed ten.

THE PLAYERS: All players will wear an approved goggle system with complete head protection.  Elbow and knee pads are optional, but highly recommended.  In addition to their common protective gear, male players are encouraged to wear athletic cups and female players are urged to wear Fem-Guards or padded bras.

THE OFFICIALS: A group of qualified officials will supervise the game.  They will consist of the game master, the scorekeeper, the timekeeper, the chronograph operator, the judges, and the referees.  The game master is in charge and has the final word on all rulings.  The scorekeeper keeps score, recording all points, bonus points, and penalties.  The timekeeper keeps time, alerts the game master in advance of the five-minute and two-minute warnings, and operates the official game clock.  The chronograph operator checks and monitors muzzle velocities to ensure all guns are shooting at or below the maximum velocity limit of 270 feet-per-second.  The judges stay close to the goal lines and the referees operate from the sidelines.  They enforce the rules, perform paint checks, and watch for penalties.  When a penalty occurs, the official will stop the game.  Officials will also stop the game when a team scores, a player is injured, a paint check is called, or when the time runs out at the end of each half.  The timekeeper must stop the clock every time an official stops the game.  Any of the officials may stop the game, but only the game master may give the signal to start or resume play.

THE FIELD: The game is played on a rectangular outdoor field that is 75 feet long and 50 feet wide. The field runs lengthwise along a gradual slope, making one side slightly higher than the other. There are goal posts and an end zone located on the north end and on the south end of the field. The sidelines of the field are plainly marked with yellow boundary tape. There are 16 wooden barricades located on the field. The barricades are wedge-shaped and range from 6 feet to 3 feet in height, with the tallest ones being located closest to the goal lines and the shortest ones nearest to the center of the field. They are staggered across the field in sets of two at varying distances from the sidelines and are set up on the field so that one side looks exactly the same as the other. Located at the very center of the field is a metal 55-gallon drum, which is where the cone sits.

THE CONE: The cone is 18-inches tall and is made of fluorescent orange vinyl plastic.

PENALTIES: Penalties are divided into two categories: fouls and violations.  When a player commits a foul, he is disqualified for the remainder of the half, his team is charged with a penalty, and the opposing team is automatically awarded a point. The round will end at that point and the players will take a short time out to prepare for the next round.  Furthermore, if the cone was in play when a foul occurs, it must be returned to midfield before the next round begins.  When a violation is committed, the offending player is disqualified for the remainder of the round only and his team is charged with a penalty.  No automatic point is awarded to the opposing team.  If the offending player was in possession of the cone, the cone will be placed on the ground where the violation occurred and, after announcing the call, the game master will give the signal to resume play.

FOULS:

Any Deliberate Infraction Of The Rules

Cheating Or Resorting To Foul Play

Using Dirty Tricks Or Unscrupulous Tactics

Fighting Or Exhibiting Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Overshooting Or Unnecessary Roughness

Arguing With An Official

Using Profane Or Otherwise Inappropriate Language

Abusing A Paint Check

Repeatedly Committing A Violation

VIOLATIONS:

Any Unintentional Infraction Of The Rules

Having Too Many Players On The Playing Field

Playing Offside Or Jumping The Starting Gun

Playing Behind The Goal Line

Reloading Or Working On A Gun, Moving Up On An Opponent, Or Communicating With A Teammate During A Paint Check Or During Any Other Time That An Official Has Stopped The Game.

Stepping Or Running Out Of Bounds

Shooting Over Or Under The Boundary Tape

Shooting Blindly

Dropping Or Grounding The Cone

Using Or Firing Non-Regulation Paintballs

Handing Off Supplies Or Equipment After Being Disqualified Or Eliminated

GAME RULES:

A whistle will be used as the starting signal and as the signal to resume play.  Airhorns will be used to stop play and to signal the end of the half. When an airhorn is blown, all players must stop shooting and stay put.  The officials will disqualify any player who continues to shoot or move up on an opponent after the airhorn is blown.  The officials will also disqualify any player caught reloading or working on a gun, and any player caught communicating with a teammate while the game is stopped.

Each round will begin with the cone at midfield and the three starting players from each team lined up behind their goal posts at opposite ends of the playing field.  All three players must remain in a group behind their respective goal line and between the goal posts until the starting signal is given.  A team may not have more than three players on the field.  Any team caught with more than three players on the field will be charged with a violation.

All players must remain forward of their goal line while the game is being played.  Any player caught shooting from the end zone will be disqualified for playing behind the goal line and his team will be charged with a violation.

Players must stay within the designated playing field boundaries.  When a player steps or runs out of bounds, or when any part of his body or equipment extends beyond or touches the boundary tape, he will be instantly disqualified and his team will be charged with a violation.  If the offending player was in possession of the cone, he will be disqualified, his team will be charged with a violation, and the cone will be placed just inside the boundary ribbon at the point where the offending player stepped or ran out of bounds.

A player who makes or intends to make a play for the cone will be permitted to discard his equipment prior to doing so.  This may only be done to lighten one's load, the sole purpose of which should be to make the player nimble of foot.  At the end of the round, any discarded equipment will be checked for marks.  If a mark is found, a violation will be accessed against the offending player's team.  Furthermore, any points scored on the play by the offending player's team will be disallowed.

The carrier of the cone must pass between the goal posts of the opposing team in order to score.

In this game, the so-called "dead flag" rule applies.  In other words, when a player carrying the cone is eliminated before he has a chance to score, he will drop the cone on the ground and leave it there.  After dropping the cone, he will leave the field and head for the dugout.

Any player not carrying the cone who crosses the opposing team's goal line will be disqualified for playing behind the goal line and his team will be charged with a violation.

There is only one way for a team to stop the opposition from advancing the cone across its goal line, and that is to shoot and eliminate the opposing team's cone carrier.  Physical force may not be used to hinder or stop the opposing team from advancing the cone.

Active teammates may pass the cone back and forth as often as they like.  A player carrying the cone may pass or hand it off to any active teammate.  If a player drops the cone or sets it down on the ground, he will be disqualified and his team will be charged with a violation.  The cone will remain on the ground where the offending player dropped it.

When players are shot and eliminated or disqualified, they will leave the playing field and walk, not run, to the dugout.  While in the dugout, players may not shoot or chronograph their paintball guns until either the round or the half ends.  Eliminated players and players who were disqualified for committing a violation will remain in the dugout until the round ends.  Players disqualified for committing a foul will remain in the dugout until the half ends.  Before returning to the playing field, eliminated players must wipe off all paint splats from their clothing and equipment so that the officials don't mistake an old hit for a fresh one.  If a player is called out for an old hit, it's his own fault for not wiping it off when he should have.

Teams may rotate and replace players between rounds only.  However, the game master, in some cases, may make an exception and, at his discretion, permit a team to replace a player who has been seriously injured even though the round isn't over yet.  A team must wait until the round ends before it may rotate players or replace a player who has been eliminated or disqualified for committing a violation.  A team may not replace a player who has been disqualified for committing a foul until the half ends.  Until the half ends, the team must continue to play short-handed.

Players are not allowed to debate a call or argue with the officials.  The decisions of the officials are final.  Any player who argues with an official will be disqualified for the remainder of the half, his team will be charged with a foul, and the opposing team will be awarded an automatic point.

GLADIATORS vs. MARAUDERS
The following is an account of the game played between the Gladiators and the Marauders:

Having won the coin toss that was conducted prior to the start of the game, the Gladiators chose to start from the downtown side of the playing field. They lined up between the goal posts behind their goal line to await the Game Master's signal to begin the match. Less than a hundred yards away, on the uptown side of the field, their opponents, the Marauders, were also ready and raring to go.

When the whistle blew, the Gladiators scrambled for position. Maverick and Odd Job ran for the building along the right boundary tape, Ironside took cover behind the wall of the center building on the downtown side of the field, Bulldog ducked inside the center building, and Lash took cover inside the building on the south end of town.

The Marauders, on the other hand, had spread out all over the uptown side of the field. One of the Marauders, Jack Valvo, took up a position inside the building along the left boundary tape and another, Corey Jones, took cover behind the two-story building located next to it. One Marauder, Steve Branson, was inside the center building on the uphill side and another, Greg Herinckx, was hunkered down behind the barricade located about five yards from it. The fifth Marauder, Ken Adams, was down on his belly in the pit along the right boundary tape.

Shortly after the game began, Odd Job eliminated the Marauder in the pit and Maverick tagged the one that was outside the two-story. A couple of minutes after that, Ironside shot and eliminated the Marauder located inside the building along the left boundary. That left only two Marauders on the field, one of whom managed to shoot and eliminate Lash. In a flash, Maverick retaliated and eliminated them both. With nobody left to stop him, he then grabbed the cone and carried it across the Marauder goal line for the point. That made the score 1 to 0, in favor of the Gladiators.

During the second play of the first half, Belladonna was sent into the game in place of Odd Job. When the whistle blew, Maverick and Ironside ran for the building along the right tape, Bulldog and Belladonna made a dash for the center building on the lower half of the field, and Lash ducked into the building on the south end of town. As for the Marauders, they had one player, Jack Valvo, inside the two-story building and another, Corey Jones, on the outside. Two other Marauders, Steve Branson and Greg Herinckx, were inside the center building on the upper end of the field. The fifth Marauder, Ken Adams, was back in the pit along the right edge of the field.

Within moments after the second play began, a penalty was called against Greg Herinckx, the captain of the Marauders. He was busted for blind shooting and consequently disqualified for the remainder of the play. Shortly after play was resumed, Maverick and Ken Adams, the Marauder in the pit, got caught up in their own private little firefight. In the end, Adams got the better of Maverick and eliminated him with a direct hit on the gun. Just moments after hitting Maverick, Adams shot and eliminated Ironside. A couple of minutes after that, he chalked up his third consecutive kill when he tagged and eliminated Bulldog. That left only Lash and Belladonna, the two lady Gladiators, in the game. At that point, three of the four remaining Marauders began to push up along the center of the field. Two of them, Ken Adams and Steve Branson, had gotten as far as the wall on the opposite side of the building where Belladonna was. At about the exact same time Adams and Branson reached the building, a third Marauder, Corey Jones, made a grab for the cone, but he fumbled and dropped it. A penalty was called and the officials stopped the game. Jones, the Marauder that dropped the cone, was instantly disqualified and, during the time the game was stopped, Adams and Branson also wound up being disqualified because they were talking during the cease fire, an activity which, in arena paintball, is strictly against the rules.

Play was again resumed, shortly after which Belladonna was hit on the gun by Jack Valvo, who was still holed up inside the two-story building. That made it one-on-one between Lash and the lone Marauder. However, the time, or what little of it was actually left in the first half, soon ran out and the score, at the end of the first half, remained 1 to 0 in favor of the Gladiators.

After the half-time intermission, the teams switched sides and the players headed back out onto the field. The five Gladiators that lined up for the opening play of the second half were Bulldog, Ironside, Belladonna, Maverick, and Odd Job. At the sound of the starting whistle, they bolted into position. Maverick came to a halt outside the building on the left edge of the field as Belladonna stopped and took cover behind the two-story located beside it. Bulldog and Ironside took up positions behind the building on the north end of the field as Odd Job slid feet first into the pit along the right boundary line.

Right at the beginning of the second half, Ken Adams of the Marauders made a play for the cone at the center of the field, but he tripped and fumbled it. A penalty was called, the game was stopped, and Adams was disqualified for dropping the cone. During the time that the game was stopped, Ironside was disqualified for talking during a cease fire. After Ironside was kicked off the field, the Game Master blew his whistle and the game was resumed.

A few minutes later, Odd Job shot and eliminated Greg Herinckx, the captain of the Marauders. At that point, Bulldog abandoned his position behind the building on the north end of the town and moved up to the barricade located along the left boundary tape, but he was hit and eliminated shortly thereafter.

With Bulldog out of the way, Branson was able to move up and get to the ravine. A few minutes later, he moved up again and joined his teammate at the center building on the lower half of the field, but that was as close as he dared to get as Maverick kept pouring on the paint like it was going out of style.

For the remainder of the game, the Gladiators stood their ground and stubbornly held on to their one point lead.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Branson, in a desperate attempt to score, made a play for the cone, but he was quickly shot and eliminated by Maverick. Soon after that, the time ran out and the Game Master concluded the match. In the end, the Gladiators had prevailed over the Marauders.

GLADIATORS vs. BUCCANEERS
The following is an account of the game played between the Gladiators and the Buccaneers:

After winning the coin toss and choosing the side of the field from which they wished to start, the five players starting for the Gladiators - Ironside, Shaft, Hawkeye, Maverick and Bulldog - moved to the goal line on the downtown end of the field. After the players from both teams moved to their starting points, the Game Master gave the signal to begin and the match got underway.

As soon as the whistle blew, the Gladiators bolted for their positions. Bulldog and Ironside ran for the center building on the lower half of the playing field, Maverick and Hawkeye took cover alongside the building on the right edge of the court, and Shaft dove behind the building on the south end of the field. As for the Buccaneers, they had one player, Mike Hodge, outside the two-story and another, Mike's brother Casey, behind the building that was right beside it. The third Buccaneer, Tony Texeira, was just outside the center building on the uphill end of the court. The fourth, Jeff Church, was outside the building on the north end of the field. The last Buccaneer, Jason Dunlap, was in the pit.

Even before he could get a shot off, Ironside was hit and eliminated. A short while later, Bulldog got tagged. The Gladiators were suddenly down by two players. From where he was at, Maverick could see Casey Hodge kneeling against the wall of the building on the opposite side of the field. Taking careful aim, Maverick fired and hit the hopper on Casey's gun, eliminating him from the game. A moment later, Casey's older brother, Mike, was hit and eliminated. That made it three on three. The sides were even again.

Crawling alongside the log in front of the pit, Jason Dunlap inched his way towards the barricade beside the building where Tony Texeira was. He then popped up and opened fire on Hawkeye, coming very close to hitting him. As Hawkeye reeled back and returned fire, Dunlap quickly ducked back down behind the barricade and made his way back to the pit.

Elsewhere, on the north end of the court, Jeff Church was having major paintball gun problems and ultimately left the field. A short time later, Tony Texeira was hit and eliminated. Now there was only one Buccaneer left in the game, Jason Dunlap. While Hawkeye was looking around to see where Dunlap had gone, a string of shots rocketed past his head, barely missing him. At that point, he realized Dunlap was back in the pit and shooting at him again.

As Hawkeye and Dunlap were trading shots, Shaft moved up to the center building on the lower half of the field. A moment later, he hit Dunlap and one of the officials stopped the game to conduct a paint check. During the time that the game was stopped, Shaft was disqualified for talking during the cease fire. After Shaft was ejected from the game and play was resumed, Maverick grabbed the cone and scored the first point for the Gladiators.

There were several minutes remaining in the first half, so both teams prepared to run another play. Just before stepping back onto the playing field, the Gladiators rotated three of their players and sent Diablo, Bamm Bamm, and Belladonna into the game. With both teams ready to go again, the players from each side lined up behind their goal posts and the Game Master, with a blast of his whistle, quickly got the match back underway.

Just moments after the starting whistle blew, the players from both sides were in position blasting away at each other. Both Diablo and Bamm Bamm were outside the building along the right tape, Ironside was inside the building on the south end of the field, Bulldog was inside the center building on the downhill side of the playing field , and Belladonna was just outside of it, hunkered down behind the wall. Jeff Church of the Buccaneers was crouched behind the building on the north end of the court, Jason Dunlap was back in the pit, Casey Hodge was outside the building located along the left boundary tape, and Tony Texeira was behind the two-story along with Mike Hodge who, plagued by a major malfunction with his paintball gun, abruptly called himself out and walked off the field.

It wasn't long after Mike left that Diablo shot and eliminated Tony Texeira. As Texeira exited the field, Jason Dunlap sprang to his feet and made a mad dash for the center building on the uphill side of the field. Although he made it to the building without getting shot, he was hit and eliminated soon afterwards.

With Dunlap gone, Diablo was able to move up and take over the center building. From there, he shot and eliminated Jeff Church. The only Buccaneer left in the game at that point was Casey Hodge. Diablo knew this, so after he tagged Church, he quickly closed in on Casey. At the same time, Bulldog grabbed the cone and made a run for the goal line. After he crossed the goal line, one of the judges examined him for paint splats and discovered an unobvious hit on the back of his kevlar glove. He was subsequently removed from the game and no point was awarded. The cone was returned to midfield and, with only 30 seconds remaining in the first half, the game was resumed.

As soon as the starting whistle blew, Bamm Bamm, racing against the clock, grabbed the cone and ran towards the goal line for the point. At the end of the half, the score was Gladiators 2, Buccaneers 0.

After the half-time intermission, the teams switched sides. This time the Gladiators would start from the uphill end of the field and the Buccaneers on the downhill side. Odd Job, Maverick, Hawkeye, Belladonna and Bulldog would start things off for the Gladiators in the second half.

After checking to make sure both teams were ready, the Game Master commenced the final half of the game. As soon as he did, the Gladiators sprang into action. Maverick sprinted towards the building on the left tape, Hawkeye high-tailed it for the two-story, Belladonna scurried towards the green barricade, and Odd Job slid into the pit as Bulldog stayed behind and poured on the paint to cover his teammates' advance. Naturally, the Buccaneers didn't waste any time taking up positions either. Dunlap and Church bolted towards the building along the right boundary, Texeira ran for the center building on the downhill side of the field, and Mike and Casey Hodge raced towards the building on the south end of the field.

Texeira was hit early on. A few moments later, Mike Hodge was hit and eliminated. A minute or two after that, Dunlap was hit on the hopper of his paintball gun and eliminated from play. Seconds later, Church was also hit on the hopper and eliminated from the game. Now the Gladiators began to close in on Casey Hodge, the sole survivor of the Buccaneers.

Belladonna was the first to advance. She moved up to the center building on the uphill side of the field. A moment later, Bulldog moved up to the two-story as Odd Job moved to the building along the right tape. As his teammates poured on the paint, Hawkeye crossed the midway point into Buccaneer territory and took cover behind the center building on the downtown end of the field. From there, he hit and eliminated Casey. After shooting Casey, Hawkeye grabbed the cone and made the score 3 to 0.

Eight minutes and twenty-five seconds remained in the second half. There was still plenty of time left in the game. After rotating a couple of their players, the Gladiators, now primed and ready for action, lined up behind their goal posts and waited for the Game Master's signal to resume play. They didn't have to wait long.

When the whistle blew, Diablo, who was back in the game, ran to the pit. Bamm Bamm, who was also back in, ducked behind the green barricade. Maverick went back to where he was before, behind the building along the left tape. Hawkeye was back at the two-story and, just as he had done previously, Bulldog stayed behind to give his teammates cover fire. In the case of the Buccaneers, everyone on their team went exactly where he had gone before. Dunlap and Church were back outside the building on the right tape, Dunlap and Church were back outside the building on the right tape, Texeira went back to the center building on the downhill side of the field, and Mike and Casey Hodge were back at the building on the south end of the field.

This time around, the Gladiators suffered the first casualty. They lost Bamm Bamm right at the beginning of the round. However, the Gladiators soon retaliated by eliminating Jeff Church. Diablo hit him on top of his head. A moment later, he took out Jason Dunlap. Soon after that, Tony Texeira was hit on the gun and eliminated from the game. At that point, Diablo moved up to the building along the right boundary tape and shot Mike Hodge.

Somewhere along the line, the Gladiators got their signals crossed and thought that all of the Buccaneers had been eliminated, when in fact there was still one opponent left, Casey Hodge. Thinking it was perfectly safe to do so, Maverick ventured out into the open and was abruptly shot and eliminated. A moment later, he was headed for the dugout to join the rest of the eliminated players.

As Maverick walked off the field, Bulldog moved up to the center building on the downhill side of the field. While he and Diablo kept Casey pinned down, Hawkeye grabbed the cone and scored another point for his team, making the score 4 to 0.

Five minutes and twelve seconds remained on the clock, still plenty of time to run another play or two. When the game was resumed, the Gladiators, who now held a substantial lead over the Buccaneers, decided to dig in and just hold the line. As they say, however, even the best laid plans "of mice and men" often go amiss. This seemed to apply in the case of our heroes as Odd Job was suddenly hit and eliminated from the round. From that point on, things went badly for the Gladiators.

Right after Odd Job had been hit, Ironside was shot and eliminated. Just then, one of the Gladiators managed to hit and eliminate Buccaneer Mike Hodge, but by that time his brother, Casey, had moved up to the center building on the upper end of the court and was practically breathing down Hawkeye's neck. At that point in the game, Bulldog, who was having some major gun problems, abruptly took himself out of the game and left the field. After watching Bulldog walk off the field, Casey rushed the two-story and opened up on Hawkeye, but while he was blasting away at Hawkeye, Maverick shot and eliminated him. Together, Casey and Hawkeye exited the field and joined the other eliminated players in the dugout. Now Maverick was all alone against the three remaining Buccaneers. In spite of this, Maverick was still able to hold them off for several minutes before one of them, Jason Dunlap, got close enough to tag him.

With only a few seconds remaining in the game, Tony Texeira grabbed the cone and scored the Buccaneers' first and only point against the Gladiators. And so the final score at the end of the game was Gladiators 4, Buccaneers 1.

GLADIATORS vs. SPARTANS
The following is an account of the game played between the Gladiators and the Spartans:

A coin toss was conducted just prior to the game, which the Gladiators lost to the Spartans. Scott Ellison, the captain of the Spartans, picked the downhill side to start from, after which the players headed for their goal posts. The five players starting for the Gladiators were Odd Job, Hawkeye, Belladonna, Bulldog, and Ironside. Soon after both teams were at their starting positions, the Game Master blew the whistle and got the match underway.

A little more than four minutes had elapsed before the first player was hit and eliminated. Unfortunately for the Gladiators, it was Belladonna. She had been behind the two-story building located near the right boundary line. About thirty seconds later, Hawkeye was hit and eliminated. He was behind the building right beside the two-story. This left a dangerous opening in the Gladiators' right flank. Ironside, who was at the north end of the field, saw the danger but was unable to move up and fill the gap. It wasn't until Jason Dunlap, one of the Spartans, had been eliminated that Ironside was finally able to move up and take Belladonna's place behind the two-story. Just moments after Ironside reached the two-story, another Gladiator was hit and eliminated. It was Bulldog. Now there were only two Gladiators left in the game: Odd Job, who was hunkered down in the pit along the left edge of the field, and Ironside on the right. The Spartans, on the other hand, still had four players scattered all over the lower half of the playing field. This spelled big trouble for the remaining two Gladiators. All that Odd Job and Ironside could hope to do at this point was to run out the clock and keep the Spartans from scoring in the first half.

For a while, Ironside and Odd Job were holding their own and things seemed to be going according to plan. However, matters suddenly took a turn for the worse when Ironside was abruptly hit and eliminated. And as if that wasn't bad enough, there was still five minutes to go in the first half, which meant that the Spartans still had plenty of time left to try and score.

Now alone and vastly outnumbered, Odd Job tried his best to run out the clock on the Spartans and thwart their attempts to score. And he almost pulled it off. Up until the time he was finally hit and eliminated, Odd Job single-handedly kept all four of his opponents at bay for over three minutes as he poured on the paint and stubbornly held his ground. As he stopped to reload, Jerry Denney of the Spartans bolted for the center building on the uphill end of the field. From where he was at, Jerry was able to trap Odd Job in a cross fire long enough for teammate Keith Harrington to push up along the right tape and get closer to the pit. Shortly after that, Odd Job was hit and eliminated.

As Odd Job headed for the dugout, Tim Behnke of the Spartans secured the cone and carried it across the goal line for the point. At this stage in the game, there were just two minutes remaining in the first half. The Gladiators would have to pull out all the stops if they expected to even things up before they ran out of time in the first half.

For the next round, the Gladiators bumped Ironside and Hawkeye and sent "Diablo" and "Bamm Bamm" into the game. The Spartans also rotated one of their players and sent Mark Blagburn in for Jason Dunlap.

Just moments after the round began, Odd Job, who had been in the pit, was hit and eliminated. Then, with a minute to go in the first half, Bulldog was hit on the gun by Mark Blagburn. In less than a minute, two Gladiators had been eliminated and the team was down to three players.

Seconds before the half ended, Mark Blagburn made a rush for the cone. As he did, the time ran out in the first half and the round came to an end. The score, at this point, was 1 to 0, in favor of the Spartans.

After the half-time intermission, the teams switched sides and prepared to begin the final half of the game. The Gladiators, looking quite restless, were anxious to get the game back underway and even up the score. Whether they would or not remained to be seen. One thing was certain, the Gladiators were off to a good start as they eliminated two of their opponents, Jason Dunlap and Tim Behnke, within the first three minutes of the round. Hawkeye and Ironside, who were both beside the building along the right boundary tape, were swapping paintballs with Mark Blagburn and Scott Ellison of the Spartans when Ironside suddenly chopped a ball. As Ironside stopped to squeegee, Hawkeye, now on his own against Blagburn and Ellison, was hit and eliminated. After Hawkeye was eliminated, Blagburn crawled to a spot from which he was able to shoot at Ironside. As Blagburn popped up and shot at Ironside, Diablo spotted him and quickly fired in his direction. The ball that hit Ironside didn't break, but the one that hit Blagburn did. Now there were only two Spartans left in the game, Keith Harrington and Scott Ellison. And the number of Spartans was soon reduced even further when Diablo shot and eliminated Harrington.

Soon after he tagged Harrington, Diablo proceeded to close in on Ellison, the only Spartan left in the game. Seeing his chance, he pushed up to the center building on the uphill side of the field. A moment later, Ironside and Bulldog moved up to join him. Bulldog had the cone.

Determined to get a clear shot at Ellison, Diablo ventured even closer to him, this time pushing up as far as the last barricade between him and his intended victim. From there, he was finally able to hit and eliminate Ellison, after which Bulldog crossed the goal line with the cone. Eight minutes and fifteen seconds after the half began, the score was now even and the Gladiators were back in the running.

With plenty of time remaining in the half, both teams took to the field once again. When the half was resumed, Bulldog and Belladonna took up positions at the center building located on the downhill side of the field. They were both hit and eliminated a short time later.

Now that there were only three Gladiators left in the game, Mark Blagburn pushed up as far as the two-story building and, a moment later, Tim Benhke moved over to the building along the left tape.

Elsewhere, Bamm Bamm was having a major problem with his paintball gun. Both he and Diablo were located behind the building along the right tape. As the Spartans moved in closer, Diablo ducked inside the building while Bamm Bamm continued to wrestle with his problem.

As the Spartans began to turn up the heat and pour on the paint, the Game Master shouted out the two minute warning. Soon thereafter, Jason Dunlap, who had been in the pit, abruptly abandoned his position and charged the building occupied by Diablo and Bamm Bamm. Caught by complete surprise, Diablo was shot squarely on top of his head before he even realized who tagged him. After he shot Diablo, Dunlap stepped around the end of the building and fired at Bamm Bamm. Just as he did, however, Bamm Bamm also fired and managed to get a shot off. Having hit each other at the same time, both players called themselves out and left the field. Now there was only one Gladiator left in the game: Odd Job. He was hunkered down behind the building on the south end of the playing field. Once again, as in the first half of the game, he was all alone against four opponents. One can only imagine what he was thinking at this point.

Although the Spartans failed to eliminate Odd Job this time around, they were able to neutralize him long enough for Mark Blagburn to grab the cone and chalk up another point.

With the score now 2 to 1, the Spartans were back on top. And with only one minute and seven seconds left in the game, there was little chance of the Gladiators catching up to them. Little chance or not, however, the Gladiators weren't about to say die. As soon as the whistle blew and the half was resumed, Odd Job charged straight up the middle of the court and slid into position alongside the center building on the uphill end of the field. From there, he began pouring on the paint and blasting away at the Spartans. Soon after they reached their position behind the building along the right boundary tape, Hawkeye and Ironside also started hammering away at their opponents. As a result of this, Hawkeye managed to nail Jason Dunlap right at the start of the round. After he tagged Dunlap, he pushed up along the right boundary line and headed towards the building on the north end of the field as Ironside poured on the paint and covered his advance. As soon as he was close enough, Hawkeye began blasting away at Scott Ellison, who was hunkered down behind the building. Right about then, Diablo grabbed the cone and made a run for the goal line. Despite his best efforts to score, he was hit just moments before crossing the line and had to return the cone to centerfold.

With only thirty-seven seconds left in the final half, the game was resumed and things heated right back up again. As soon as the match got back underway, Bulldog shot and eliminated Tim Behnke. After eliminating Behnke, he grabbed the cone and linked up with Odd Job. A moment later, Hawkeye charged and eliminated Scott Ellison. Right after that, Odd Job made a run for the goal line as Bulldog trailed behind him with the cone. Alas, Bulldog was hit before he crossed the line and, once again, the cone was returned to midfield. And as if that wasn't unfortunate enough for the Gladiators, Odd Job was disqualified by the Game Master for stepping out of bounds. That left only two Gladiators in the game.

With only thirteen seconds remaining in the final half, the game was resumed one last time. As Hawkeye and Jerry Denney of the Spartans were trading shots, the Game Master commenced his ten second countdown. Just as the countdown began, Ironside abandoned his position behind the building along the right tape and made a grab for the cone. With the cone in one hand and his paintball gun in the other, he rounded the outside corner of the two-story building and blind-sided Denney, who, at that particular moment, was lying on the ground a few feet away from the building. Right after he eliminated Denney, Ironside, racing against the clock, quickly headed for the goal line. Half-way there, he stumbled and fell and, after dropping the cone, was promptly disqualified.

Out of time, the game was concluded and the final score was Spartans 2, Gladiators 1. When it was all over, the players congratulated each other for a game well-played and talked about a rematch.

GLADIATORS vs. RAIDERS
The following is an account of the game played between the Gladiators and the Raiders:

Just before the game, the Game Master assembled the contestants and conducted the official coin toss. The Gladiators won the toss and chose to start from the downhill side of the playing field. Five players from each team took to the field and lined up behind their goal posts. As they waited for the game to begin, they removed their barrel plugs and prepared for action. Starting for the Gladiators was Diablo, Bulldog, Lash, Hawkeye, and Ironside.

On the Game Master's signal, the first half commenced and the players from both sides scrambled for positions. Diablo and Lash took cover behind the wall of the building located along the right boundary tape as Bulldog quickly ducked inside. Ironside ran inside the center building on the lower half of the playing field as Hawkeye dove behind the tree stump close beside it. On the uphill side, the five players from the Raiders were keeping fairly close to each other, with most of them remaining near their goal line. Two of the Raiders were behind the building on the north end of the town and another was hunkered down behind the barricade right next to them. They also had one player behind the barricade along the left tape and another in the pit along the right boundary.

About thirty seconds into the game, Bulldog, who had been inside the building on the right tape, bolted from the doorway and ran for the center building on the upper end of the court. A split second later, Lash made a charge up the right flank and bunkered Joon Yang, the Raider in the pit, but not before Yang shot and eliminated Bulldog.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the court, Charlie Tiantawach of the Raiders, who was behind the barricade along the left tape, suddenly stood up and walked off the field after being long-balled by Diablo. Shortly after that, Ironside shot and eliminated Cyrus Cruz, who was behind the barricade near the building on the north side of town.

Just minutes after the game began, the Raiders were down to two players, whereas the Gladiators still had four of the five players they started out with. The remaining two Raiders, Rob Farr and Tom Odell, were behind the building on the north end of town. They were both shooting at Lash. They had her pinned down and trapped behind a log. While Farr kept Lash pinned to the ground, Odell leap-frogged his way to the barricade along the left boundary tape. Just as Odell reached the barricade, Rob Farr was hit and eliminated.

Shortly after Farr had been hit, Odell spotted Ironside inside one of the middle buildings and took a few shots at him. Although he managed to hit him, none of the balls broke. Right after that, Odell abandoned his position behind the barricade and made a run for the building along the left boundary tape. Fortunately for Odell, none of the Gladiators saw him make his move. Undetected, he slowly made his way around the front wall of the building. From his new vantage point, he was able to get a clear shot at Ironside. As Odell took aim, Diablo moved up to the center building on the uphill side of the playing field. Just as Diablo reached the building, Odell shot and eliminated Ironside. A moment later, Diablo caught a glimpse of Odell and opened fire. As Diablo was shooting at Odell, Lash circled around and got behind him. After skirting the north end of the field, she was able to sneak up on Odell and shoot him in the back.

With no one left to stand in their way, the Gladiators were now able to score. Realizing this, Diablo grabbed the cone and carried it across the goal line for the point.

There was still plenty of time left in the first half, eleven minutes and nineteen seconds, more than enough time to run another play, which is exactly what the players prepared to do.

As soon as the whistle blew, the Gladiators took off running. Lash and Diablo took up positions outside the building on the right tape. Ironside ducked inside the center building on the lower half of the field. Hawkeye made it all the way to the building on the south end of the playing court. On the other hand, Bulldog was hit and eliminated before he could even get to where he was going, meaning the Gladiators were already down by one player. As for the Raiders, who still had all five of their players, they set themselves up exactly the way they had before, with two players behind the building on the north end of town, one player behind the barricade in front of the building, one player behind the barricade along the left boundary line, and one player in the pit.

Less than a minute after the round began, Rob Farr, who was behind the building on the north end of the field, was hit and eliminated. Now the sides were even.

Suddenly, Diablo, who was behind the wall of the building near the right tape, had a ball burst in the barrel of his paintball gun and had to stop and squeegee it out. Lash, who was standing right behind him, abruptly ducked inside the building. Seeing their chance, the Raiders began pushing up. Charlie Tiantawach, who had been behind the barricade along the left tape, suddenly sprang to his feet and ran behind the two-story building. Right after that, Cyrus Cruz moved up and took cover behind the barricade where Tiantawach had been. Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, several of the Gladiators were shooting at Joon Yang, the Raider in the pit. The Gladiators were relentless. They kept blasting away at Yang in an all-out effort to eliminate him. And it wasn't very long before they did. Now there were only three Raiders left in action. That number soon dwindled down to two as Ironside took out Tiantawach with a direct hit to the hopper. Right after that, Hawkeye abandoned his position on the south side of the town and moved up to the building where Ironside was. As Hawkeye moved up, Odell left his position behind the building on the north end of town and dove into a clump of tall ferns about ten feet away.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, Lash was abruptly shot and eliminated. That made it three against two. The Gladiators were still up one over the Raiders, giving them a slight numerical advantage.

From where he laid on the ground amid the ferns, Odell fired a volley of paintballs towards Hawkeye and Ironside, but Hawkeye quickly returned fire and eliminated him. Now there was only one Raider left on the field, Cyrus Cruz, who was still hunkered down behind the barricade along the left tape. While the other Gladiators kept Cruz pinned down, Diablo moved up to the next building in order to get a clear shot at him. After Diablo tagged Cruz, Ironside grabbed the cone and carried it across the Raiders' goal line. That made the score 2 to 0.

With two minutes and forty-two seconds left in the half, the players from both sides formed up at their goal lines and prepared to run another play. Just before that, however, the Gladiators rotated a few of their players around, sending Cajun and Belladonna into the game to take Hawkeye's and Lash's place.

When the game was resumed, Cajun ducked inside the center building on the downhill side of the field and Belladonna took cover behind one of the walls. Bulldog ran inside the building on the south end of the court. Diablo took cover behind the wall of the building along the right tape while Ironside charged through the doorway and took up a defensive position inside. The Raiders, who were behind by two points, were prepared to stand their ground. They had two players in the pit, one outside the two-story, one player behind the barricade on the north side of town, and one player behind the barricade along the left tape. At the very least, they were determined to keep the Gladiators from scoring again.

Shortly after play was resumed, Belladonna was hit and eliminated. Right after that, one of the Raiders in the pit, Joon Yang, was shot and eliminated. Tom Odell, who was in the pit with Yang, abruptly vacated the position and ran to the center building on the uptown side of the field.

Elsewhere on the playing field, Rob Farr abandoned his position behind the two-story and moved to the building along the left tape. A moment later, Charlie Tiantawach moved up and took Farr's place behind the two-story. From there, Tiantawach was able to shoot and eliminate Ironside.

With thirty seconds to go in the first half, the Gladiators were down to three players. The Raiders, on the other hand, had four players left on the field. Their numerical advantage was short-lived, however, as Diablo tagged and eliminated Cyrus Cruz just moments before the Game Master began the ten second countdown to end the first half.

After switching sides, the Gladiators and the Raiders were ready to begin the second half of their match. Diablo, Bulldog, Belladonna, Hawkeye and Cajun would be going in for the Gladiators. At the whistle, Diablo bolted for the pit, Hawkeye ran into the center building on the upper half of the playing court, Cajun ducked behind the building on the north end of the field, and Bulldog and Belladonna took cover behind the two-story.

About two minutes after the second half got underway, Bulldog was shot in the hip by Rob Farr, who was inside the center building on the downhill side of the playing field. About a minute later, one of the Raiders behind the building along the right boundary tape, Joon Yang, charged the pit and bunkered Diablo at point-blank range. Although he succeeded in eliminating Diablo, Yang himself was tagged and eliminated in the process. For the moment, the Raiders, with four players on the field, outnumbered the remaining three Gladiators. All of that was about to change.

Tom Odell, who was behind the wall of the building that Farr was in, rushed the two-story and tried to take out Belladonna, but he only managed to get himself shot and eliminated in the attempt. Shortly after Odell was hit, Belladonna shot and eliminated Rob Farr. The Gladiators had succeeded in turning the tables on the Raiders, who now only had two players left on the field, Cyrus Cruz and Charlie Tiantawach. The Gladiators, however, were unable to exploit their numerical advantage as, all of a sudden, Hawkeye encountered a major gun problem and Belladonna abruptly discovered she was low on air. Consequently, our heroes were left with no other choice but to dig in and stand their ground, which was precisely what they did for the remainder of the second half. When the Game Master signaled the end of the match, the final score was Gladiators 2, Raiders 0.
